Journalists observe black day

Karachi:Journalists belonging to the print and electronic media staged a peaceful rally on Monday that started from the Karachi Press Club and ended at the Sindh Governor House. Journalists said that they were all set to face the fight for their rights and anybody who tried to crush the voice of the fourth estate would be dealt with accordingly.

The rally was jointly organised by the Karachi Union of Journalists, Karachi Press Club and the Electronic Media Association. It was also attended by political parties including ANP, PPP, MMA, civil society members and Aurat Foundation

The demonstration was staged on a call given by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) against police highhandedness on September 29 in Islamabad. Sabihuddin Ghausi, President of the Karachi Press Club said it was unfortunate that more than 29 journalists were humiliated and injured and no case was registered against anyone, while a case was registered against those persons who beat MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar.

He said letter pads and pens are weapons of journalists and “we would continue writing against oppression and suppression by the government and would never surrender in front of state forces.”

President Electronic Media Association, Javed Saba and Idris Bakhtiar, a journalist, also spoke on the occasion. Shameem-ur-Rehman, KUJ President warned the concerned quarters that any conspiracy to crush the voices of journalists who were conveying the truth to the people would be foiled.
