Journalists, lawyers overcome differences

KARACHI, April 17: A reconciliatory committee comprising senior journalists and lawyers resolved the differences between Karachi Bar Association (KBA) and journalists at a local hotel on Tuesday.

It was decided that members of the civil society would collectively work for rule of law in the country, and the ongoing campaign for independence of judiciary would not be affected by the incident that occurred on April 13. The journalists would not face any problem in fulfilling their professional duties, it was pledged.

Later, a general body meeting of the representative journalists organisations was held at the Karachi Press Club which gave approval to the decisions taken at the committee’s meeting.

The meeting was attended by General Secretary Sindh High Court Bar Association Munir-ur-Rehman, former general secretary SHCBA Moin Azhar, Asim Iqbal advocate, KBA President Iftikhar Javaid Qazi, Vice President Qadir Khan, General Secretary Naeem Qureshi, Joint Secretary Amir Niaz Khan, Treasurer Naseer Abbasi, members of managing committee Arif Khan and Mohammad Hafeez.

The journalists who took part in the discussion were General Secretary Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) Mazhar Abbas, President Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) Shamim-ur-Rehman, General Secretary Javaid Chaudhry, General Secretary Karachi Press Club Mohammad Imtiaz Khan Faran, President ATJ Javaid Sabah, General Secretary Faisal Aziz, court reporters’ representatives Ali Hamza Khan and Asghar Umer.

Meanwhile, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association Munir A. Malik said that a two-member committee comprising former KBA president Mehmood-ul-Hassan and Mohammad Ali Abbasi would play its role in ensuring coverage of lawyers’ activities on Wednesday in a pleasant atmosphere.
