Journalists demand withdrawal of Pemra ordinance

RAWALPINDI (November 16 2007): Journalists have called upon the government to withdraw the Pemra (Amendment) Ordinance, remove restrictions on media and release their detained companions. They held a protest demonstration on Thursday under the aegis of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) Dastoor and Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ).

PFUJ president Muhammad Nawaz Raza led the protest demonstration attended by a large number of journalists from both print and electronic media. The journalists marched towards Murree Road from the club building chanting slogans against the imposition of black laws and detention of their companions.

Opposition leaders and workers belonging to MMA, PML-N and Tehreek-e-Insaf also took part in the demonstration. Addressing the demonstrators, PFUJ president Muhammad Nawaz Raza said that the freedom of media was imperative for grooming a nation. The curbs on media would have negative impact on the society, he added.
