Journalists boycott BA proceedings to protest against target killings

QUETTA: Journalists boycotted the proceedings of the Balochistan Assembly on Monday to protest against the incident of target killing in Turbat in which two journalists were shot and injured.

The protesting journalists walked out from the Press Gallery and staged a demonstration in front of the assembly building. They raised slogans against the government for its failure to protect the lives of journalists.

Around 10 journalists were killed in Balochistan in target killing incidents, but there was no progress in the investigation of any of the incidents, the Balochistan Union of Journalists President, Essa Tareen, said. Many Baloch journalists had left their jobs out of fear, finding no security to their personal lives. “Journalists across the province are living under serious threats, which have left a great impact on their professional life,” Tareen said. The protesters complained that the main threats were from the security forces and the state functionaries.

Information Minister Younas Mullazai calmed down the journalists and persuaded them to come into the chief minister’s chamber for talks.
