Journalists arrested, released in Quetta

Journalists protested against curbs on media here on November 21, 2007 (Wednesday) and took out a rally which marched on various city roads. Police arrested 25 journalists when they tried to march towards the PEMRA office.

Heavy contingent of policemen were deployed outside the Quetta Press Club and sealed all link roads. Police stopped demonstrators at Manan Chowk and arrested 25 journalists including President Quetta Press Club Shahzada Zulfiqar, Aijaz Khan, Muhammad Essa Tareen, Irfan Saeed, Kazim Mengal, Naseer Naz, Muhammad Afzal Mughal, Mustafa Tareen, Mushtaq Kamboh, Salman Ashraf, Amin Fitrat, Akhtar Mirza, Abdul Khaliq Rind, Naeem Hamid, Muhammad Sabir, Banaris Khan, Naseer Ahmad, Asif, Shahzad Ahmad, Malik Siraj, Shah Hussain Tareen, Muhammad Yaqub, and Saif. They also included camera men and photographers. Police also snatched their mobile phones.

The media men carried banners, placards and were chanting slogans against the PEMRA ordinance. They also demanded lifting of ban on media and private channels. Arrested journalists were lodged in the City Police Station. Later they were released after couple of hours.
