Journalist, writer Taqi passes away

KARACHI, June 26: Noted writer and former editor of Jang Syed Mohammad Taqi, died early on Saturday morning. He had been suffering from cancer of gall bladder for quite some time. He has left behind his wife, two sons, two daughters and scores of admirers.

A number of people have termed his passing away a great loss to the nation, saying that Syed Taqi’s death had created a vacuum in the world of letters. They said the Karachiites had been deprived of the valuable patronage of a great human being.

His mortal remains will be buried in Sakhi Hasan graveyard, North Nazimabad, after funeral prayers at Masjid-i-Khairul Amal, Ancholi, Federal B Area, after Zohr on Sunday. Soyem will be held on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Imambargah, Shuhada-i-Karbala, Ancholi.

Syed Mohammad Taqi was born in November 1917 at Amroha, UP, India. He did his master’s in philosophy from Delhi University. Beginning his career in journalism from a monthly ‘Musafir’ in Muradabad, he worked in Delhi for ‘Hurriyat’ and ‘Aria Warat’. Later, he worked for ‘Asia’ in Meerut.

He joined Jang in 1942 and after migration to Pakistan he continued his association with the newspaper. He was the first editor of Jang and worked in that capacity for more than two decades.

Syed Taqi was an active member of the International Philosophy Congress and remained its president for three years. He translated Karl Marx’s epic work ‘Das Kapital’ into Urdu. His books on literature and philosophy included ‘Rooh Aur Falsafa’, ‘Tareekh Aur Kainat’, ‘Mera Nazria’, ‘Purisrar Kainat’, ‘Pakistan: Pasmanzar and Peshmanzar’, ‘Mantiq, Falsafa Aur Tareekh Ka Naia Tasawar’. He also translated Darwin’s ‘Origin of Species’ into Urdu titled ‘Asil-al-Anwa’.

Syed Mohammad Taqi belonged to a family where literature and philosophy occupied great, positions. The late Rais Amrohi, Jon Elia and Mohammad Abbas are his brothers. His sons and daughters are Haider Taqi, Hamwarbi Taqi, Shaista Saeed and Shahnaz Saeed. Sons-in-law, Mumtaz Saeed is associated with business education and Munawar Saeed is a noted film artist.
