Journalist Housing Scheme: Sindh governor sanctions Rs 20 million for starting uplift work

KARACHI- The Governor of Sindh, Dr Ishratul Ibad, has directed the Sindh government to complete all the development works in Journalist Housing Scheme at Hawksbay within three years.

He was speaking at the formal launch of development works in Journalist Housing Scheme, Hawksbay, organised by the Karachi Press Club (KPC) at the site here on April 10, 2003.

He endorsed the idea of formation of Journalists Foundation and said this foundation should be meant for the journalists of entire Sindh.

In this regard, he assured that the Sindh government would extend its full co-operation.

On the occasion, he also announced a grant of Rs 1 million for Karachi Press Club and assured consideration of other genuine demands.

Dr Ishrat appreciated the hectic efforts of the KPC office-bearers for the development of the housing scheme as the issue had become virtually dead.

He also issued an advice of Rs 20 million to the Lyari Development Project (LDP) for starting the development work and asked the Sindh Chief Secretary to personally monitor the pace of work at least after every six weeks.

He directed the LDP to improve the condition of access road from Mauripur on emergency basis.

Earlier, in his welcome address, KPC Secretary Khurshid Abbasi said, “the presence of Governor Sindh shows his keenness and interest as he has directed all the provincial government departments for the early development of the Journalist Housing Scheme”.

Speaking on the occasion City Nazim Naimatullah Khan said that the city government would develop the area under its Coastal Development Scheme.

He said the city government, would plant trees and beautify the area. If the journalists agreed, he added, he would approach the Governor of State Bank of Pakistan to provide loans on soft-term basis for the construction of houses in the scheme.

He pointed out that the city government had sought loans for the construction of houses of the Lyari Expressway affectees.

The LDP Project Director, Shafiqur Rehman Paracha, said that the Sindh government has initially provided Rs 20 million for development works and a similar amount would be announced by June this year.

The Chief Secretary of Sindh, K.B. Rind, said that the provincial government would complete this project within three years.

The KPC President, Sabihuddin Ghausi, urged the Governor to provide more plots for the new members of the KPC.

He said that an alternate route for the Hawksbay scheme should be constructed and suggested that it should be linked with the RCD highway.
