Jirgas not allowed to resolve Karo Kari cases: Rauf

KARACHI, June 15 2006: Sindh Home Minister, Rauf Siddiqi has directed that while taking immediate actions the people who give verdict of murder in cases of Karo Kari, be arrested forthwith and awarded exemplary punishment. He issued directive in this regard while taking notice of newspaper report regarding murder of eight persons including four women in Kandhkot.

He described decisions by Jirgas in cases of Karo Kari as illegal, immoral and unIslamic and a number of innocent lives in Sindh had been sacrificed at the altar of this uncivilised custom. He said what was needed is to root out this custom for which it is necessary that strict action is taken against those taking such decision in the Jirga.

Rauf Siddiqi pointed out that only courts are empowered to award punishments and no jirga or any influential person can use this authority. Karo Kari is a straight murder and in such cases same sections should apply as are in vogue in murder cases.
