KARACHI: To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Japan, the Japan Cultural Centre held an exhibition of Japanese calendars of 2012 at its premises on Friday.

The exhibition was held in collaboration with Pakistan-Japan Cultural Association Sindh and Pakistan-Japan Business Forum.

Masaharu Sato, the Consul General of Japan, said the exhibition was the first cultural event of the celebrations and stated that the calendars which showed the sophisticated printing technology of Japan were effective messengers depicting the many aspects of the country.

“The Japan Fest which will be held in March will present its programmes such as Ikebana and martial arts, in Karachi at the arts council throughout the year. We should focus on today and forget the regrets of our past, to make our tomorrow better,” said Mr Sato stated at the end of his speech.

Fatima Surraiya Bajiya, the president of PJCA, said that she adored the Japanese people as they were honest, sincere and hardworking and wished she was healthy enough to go to Japan and work with the people and help them overcome the recent disasters.

“This display has variety, colour, friendship and love. The calendars are so beautiful that if I was a thief I would have stolen all of them. I wish we could be more like the Japanese,” said Bajiya.

The president of the PJFB, Abdul Qadir Jaffer, wished that there was more cooperation between the two nations as Pakistan could learn a lot from the vast technology available in Japan.

He was impressed by the punctuality, discipline, commitment and dedication shown by the Japanese towards their work.

“Each year I learn something new about your country at the exhibition. I have discovered today that 10 percent of the world’s volcanoes are in your country by seeing a calendar here,” said Mr Jaffer.

Of the 300 calendars, 145 have been displayed at the Japanese Cultural Centre. The remaining calendars will be sent to the Quetta Consulate and also presented at the Japan Fest in Karachi in March.

The calendars cover different aspects of Japanese life ranging from children, bonsai, daily life, food and technology.

The most popular among the visitors were those depicting art, landscapes and the seasons because of their scenic beauty and vibrant colours.

This is the 20th exhibition presented at the consulate in Karachi.
