It’s a sub judice matter, says Durrani

ISLAMABAD, March 13: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Mohammad Ali Durrani has said that actions of certain politicians outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday during the Supreme Judicial Council hearing were politically motivated and tantamount to an attempt to influence the judicial process.

Addressing a press conference at the PTV headquarters, Senator Durrani described media reports about misbehaviour with the Chief Justice as baseless.

He said that the Supreme Judicial Council had asked the media not to comment on its proceedings as the matter was sub judice.

The minister urged the media to follow the SJC directions, saying that he himself would not comment on the hearing.

“The non-functional Chief Justice behaved like a politician and his acts were politically motivated,” he said.

He said that the government had arranged full protocol for the Chief Justice and police escort had been sent to pick him from his residence for the hearing.

“Despite the provision of protocol, the non-functional Chief Justice along with his wife left for the hearing on foot which was not only improper but also against the security requirements,” he said.

“How a judge of superior court could contact politicians. How could he travel in the vehicles of politicians? How could he contact politicians on phone and via e-mails?” he questioned.

“Officials time and again requested the Chief Justice to board the government vehicle to ensure his security. But he reflected such requests and kept walking till Balochistan House,” said the minister.

“There are 18 servants and three cars at his residence. All the other facilities including television, cable connection, fridge and other necessary items are provided at his residence,” he said and added that the non-functional Chief Justice could meet the people of his choice and there was no restriction in this regard.

Rejecting the speculation about possibility of declaration of emergency, Senator Durrani said such rumours were unfounded and uncalled for.
