Ispak calls for setting up private data gateways

KARACHI, August 31 2005: The Internet Service Providers Association Pakistan (Ispak) has demanded for the establishment of private data gateways for private sector to accelerate the broadband proliferation in Pakistan, which is currently less than 1 per cent.

Ansarul Haq, Ispak President and Chief Operating Officer of Cybernet, told this while talking to newsman on Tuesday August 30. “Pakistan should also grow fast as part of the global information society and capitalise on the opportunities we have in the call centre and business process outsourcing industry,” he said.

Ansar said equal access for all through e-access, nurturing human capital by e-learning, promoting tourism by e-culture and changing the face of business by e-business will be the core change agents for the proliferation of the broadband in Pakistan.

“Indian Planning Commission targets 35 million subscribers by 2007 and the 2004 Broadband Policy seeks 40 million subscribers by 2010,” Haq said, adding that whereas in Pakistan, none of the National Development Plan mentioned Internet, while 2004 Broadband Policy envisage 200,000 broadband expansion per year.

According to the Ispak chief, there are 2.4 million Internet users in Pakistan as compared to 6 million and 100 million users in India and China respectively. “In India, broadband connections were only 49,000 till December 2004, while it has grown up to 450,000 by July 2005,” he said.
