ISLAMABAD: President Pervez Musharraf said Pakistan stands committed to the promotion and protection of Human Rights and will set up an independent National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) to provide safeguards and security to its citizens.

The president, in a message on the anniversary of the adoption of the

Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations in 1948, said the NCHR would ensure protection of human rights in accordance with Fundamental Rights and Principles of Policy, as enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan. These provisions are also in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the president said.

He said the government was endeavouring to create a society free of human suffering and deprivations. He pointed that even in the interim government, a full fledged Minister for Human Rights had been appointed to establish a workable frame-work on human rights, envisage the elimination of injustice, poverty and safeguard human dignity by establishing the rule of law.

“In pursuance of the last Sermon of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), the provisions of the Constitution, regarding fundamental rights as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Pakistan stands committed to the promotion and protection of Human Rights not only of its people, but also of people every where in the world.”

He said special emphasis was being given to safeguard the rights of women, children, minorities and under privileged in the country.

President Musharraf said the government would be providing institutional machinery in the form of National Commission for Human Rights, which will be entirely independent in its jurisdiction. Meanwhile, Caretaker Prime Minister Muhammadmian Soomro has called for collective efforts for the promotion and protection of human rights.

In his message on International Human Rights Day, the prime minister said the national priorities to elevate human dignity also include poverty alleviation and education for all, adding he believed that achievement of these goals was a shared responsibility of all international communities. “It is imperative that besides working toward realization of civil and political rights, we should also strive for economic, social and cultural rights.”
