Islamabad: Journalists, students and civil society members on Thursday set up a protest camp outside the Islamabad Press Club and rallied to PEMRA office, demanding media freedom.

The PPP leader Babar Awan, former minister J. Salik and others made speeches during the rally. Awan said the curbs placed on media by the PEMRA were “unacceptable”. He said journalists were following the path of assassinated Benazir Bhutto, who never gave up.

Rawalpindi/Islamabad Union of Journalist (RIUJ) President Afzal Butt condemned the ordinance restricting media and said journalists would continue struggle unless ban on media and some programme hosts was lifted. Butt claimed the PEMRA chairman was introducing suppressive regulations to please his “masters”. Butt will lead a journalist delegation leaving for Larkana tomorrow (Saturday) to condole Bhutto’s assassination with Asif Ali Zardari. Names of the delegates would be finalized by today (Friday) evening.
