ISLAMABAD (December 12 2007): Military troops launched artillery barrages on suspected militant hideouts in the Swat, killing 20 rebels and injuring up to 15, the army said Tuesday. The new operation came two days after the army claimed it had cleared almost all the embattled militants, killing 290 rebels and arresting another 143 in recent weeks.

“According to our information, 20 militants were killed while 10-15 were injured on Monday night,” chief military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad said. He said the army also used gunshot helicopters to purge the areas of militants. “The situation is now well under control and people are returning to their homes in these areas,” Arshad added. President Pervez Musharraf, who cited the growing, ordered the army to clear Swat of rebels after they had made sweeping gains since July.
