Islamabad bar pleads SC to become party in case

ISLAMABAD: To present its stance with reference to anti-judiciary campaign of ARY channel, District Bar Association (DBA) Islamabad has filed a petition in the Supreme Court (SC) for being a party in Case no. 48/2014 regarding Independent Media Corporation Pvt Ltd (Jang, Geo Group).

Advocate Syed Nayyab Hassan Gardezi has filed this miscellaneous petition in the Supreme Court on behalf of DBA President Naseer Ahmad Kiyani through Advocate on Record Arshad Ali Chaudhry.It has been held that the DBA had remained active for the independence of judiciary like other Bars of the country, as a result of which the independent judiciary was reinstated.

The Constitution of Pakistan has been the custodian of integrity of the judiciary. However, some elements did not like the independence of judiciary and its emergence as a strong and powerful institution. They started baseless propaganda to influence the reputation of this institution, the petition said.

In the transmission of a programme of ARY channel aired from May 22 to 31, 2014, Supreme Court’s Justice Jawwad S Khawaja was targeted with criticism. It was decided in the DBA’s meeting to further improve the repute of the higher judiciary by assisting the courts. Therefore, the petition be accepted for hearing their stance, the petition noted.
