Iqbal Haider blasts Punjab Assembly
KARACHI: Former Federal Minister for Human Rights and Law Senator (R) Iqbal Haider has expressed dismay over the resolution passed by the Punjab Assembly prohibiting the holding of concerts in girls institutions due to the tragic death of three girls in a stampede at a musical concert organized in the Arts Council Auditorium.
“All citizens were grieved over this most unfortunate avoidable incident causing death of three and injuries to many other girls. This tragedy however, cannot be made the basis of yet another prohibition against the girls by any stretch of law or logic,” he said in a statement.
The prohibition suggested by the Punjab Assembly members is in violation of the constitution, laws and all norms of decency and justice. Senator Haider called upon the Punjab Assembly to rescind its resolution and instead adopt the right course to require the local administration to ensure protection of our girls and all sections of the civil society to enjoy their healthy lawful activities.
The failure to provide protection by the authorities cannot be justification for depriving the girls or for that matter other sections of the society of their fundamental rights to enjoy life in a lawful manner, he added.
