International bar joins condemnation

LAHORE, March 22: The Human Rights Institute of International Bar Association has condemned the Pakistan government’s action against right to assembly and freedom of expression, says the association secretary.

Sarfraz Cheema said the institute’s representative, St Mathew Daniel, telephoned him and expressed concern over reports that the police had responded violently to the recent protests by lawyers following the suspension of the Supreme Court chief justice.

“The IBA opposes any action that interferes with citizens’ right to free assembly as well as with the media, and has been disturbed by claims that the police had damaged a private TV office,” he quoted the official.

“Justice Iftikhar is known throughout Pakistan for his reputation in upholding human rights and challenging the government’s decisions. The IBA was also concerned by reports that closed court hearings had been conducted and the specific charges against the chief justice had not been made public.”

The IBA called upon the government to ensure respect for fundamental human rights and reinstate Justice Iftikhar, besides abiding by the Pakistani Constitution and international law in all further actions, he conveyed the message.

Human Rights Institute Co-Chair Ambassador Emilio Cardenas and Co-Chair Justice Richard Goldstone also expressed full support to the legal community in Pakistan, added the secretary.
