Indian channels capture business after emergency

LAHORE (PPI) – The advertising business of private channels in Pakistan has diverted to India after imposition of a ban on them in the country under emergency rules.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) banned the transmission on news and current affairs channels in the country after promulgation of emergency and taking advantage of this situation the cable operators were airing Indian channels for the last five days.

According to private channel sources, the total volume of advertising in Pakistan was approximately Rs 12b annually and some 14,000 people were working in electronic media industry.

After the emergency the advertising business was badly suffered due to government sanctions on private channels.

Marketing Manager of a Karachi-based private channel, Shoaib Husnain told this scribe that marketing business has almost collapsed for the last one week and there was no hope for new business in future. We were also facing hard trouble for recovery of the outstanding amounts from advertising companies under this situation, he added.

PEMRA had banned Indian channels last year but now cable operators were airing Indian channels like Zee, Sony and some English channels illegally, he observed.

The private channel sources said that there were 54 Pakistani channels but after state of emergency 17 news and current affairs channels were completely banned, while total 36 channels were affected after government sanctions.
