HRCP urges govt to disclose whereabouts of JSQM leaders

LAHORE: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has urged the government to disclose the whereabouts of two Sindhi nationalist leaders – Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM) Senior Vice Chairman Dr Mir Alam Muree and Umer Teewano alias Raja Dahar – who were picked up by plainclothedmen from Hyderabad on March 5.

According to details, Alam Muree and Umer Teewano were sitting at a restaurant opposite Rajputana Hospital, Gulshan-e-Sajad on March 5 in the jurisdiction of Bhatai Nagar Police Station, Hyderabad. Witnesses said that they were picked up by plainclothmen belonging to law enforcement agencies who came in four vehicles, including a police mobile. Before taking them away they were hit by rifle butts.

Daughter of Dr Mir Alam, Ghazal Muree, told the HRCP that on Monday at 7:30pm her father talked to her, but after 20 minutes when she called back, her father’s cell phone was switched off. There was no FIR against her father, she added.

HRCP office-bearers demanded the government to release the detainees immediately if they were not to be charged with a cognisable criminal offence. They said the families of the detainees should be allowed to meet them and they should be provided access to lawyers. They said that the detainees should be protected from torture and other ill-treatment while they were in detention. They said that they should be dealt with according to the law. They also urged the government to provide them all kinds of medical facilities.
