HRCP demands release of judges

Expressing serious concern at Munir Malik’s illness in jail and the hardships being caused to superior court judges and their families under unlawful detention, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has called for an immediate lifting of bar to the judges’ and lawyers’ liberty.

In a statement issued by Hina Jilani of the HRCP, the commission said it is extremely concerned by the reports that the former Supreme Court (SC) bar chief, Munir Malik’s condition in Attock Jail has become serious. He is said to be losing consciousness. On the other hand, the present Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) chief, Aitzaz Ahsan, and senior bar leader Ali Ahmed Kurd are also reported to be ill.

The detention of these leaders of the bar and of the public opinion is not only unwarranted and unlawful but is against the demand of a fair poll and all codes of human decency as well. They must be released forthwith, said Jilani on Friday. “All restrictions on their freedom of movement and their right to receive visitors must be withdrawn,” said the HRCP.

Meanwhile, the HRCP denounced the killing of the Baloch leader Balach Marri. “Whatever anybody may have had against the slain Baloch leader, the incident is likely to increase the alienation of Balochis from the country,” the HRCP said.
