HRCP condemns forced conversion, demands action

LAHORE: Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) condemned the kidnapping and alleged forced conversion to Islam of a Hindu girl, Rinkal, and urged the government to immediately hold a judicial inquiry of the incident.

A statement issued by HRCP demanded protection for minorities. According to the statement, “Rinkal D/O Nand Lal, a teenage Hindu girl was abducted a few days ago from Mirpur Mathelo, district Ghotki, Sindh. She was kept in custody of Mian Mithu, a Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MNA. On the protest of Hindu community, she was presented before the court on February 25.” “She told the court that she wanted to go back to her parents. On the next date of hearing, February 27, no Hindu was allowed to enter the court, while a large number Muslims were present there,” the statement said.

“The court’s judgement said, ‘The girl is saying that I want to go to my home. After marriage, her husband’s home is her home. And I am allowing her to live with her husband.’ According to Hindu community, the girl was forcibly converted and given the Muslim name Faryal. It is not the first incident of its kind. Cases of forced conversion have been reported earlier also,” the statement concluded.
