HR Day dedicated to Balochistan

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has dedicated this year’s Human Rights Day for expressing solidarity with the people of Balochistan.

The Human Rights (HR) Day is to be observed on Saturday. The representatives of the HRCP say that Balochistan stands out for more than one reason. Rampant injustice, enforced disappearances, dumped bodies and the targeted killing of members of the Hazara community are some of the reasons, making it “an alarming situation”, says Zohra Yusuf of the HRCP.

Although the situation countrywide was way more appalling, she added that violent streaks of extremism, nationalism, separatism had all played their part in making the situation in Balochistan “too extreme to ignore”. “It is more of a war-like situation. But it is largely so because all of us have chosen to ignore it completely,” Yusuf said. The HRCP will hold a press conference at the Karachi Press Club as well as a candlelit vigil for the victims of violence.

She adds that what needs to be realised is that we as a nation cannot look at the situation in the province in isolation at all. The people of Balochistan want the same things as other people in our country; demand the same rights as well. The ceiling needs to be broken, she says.
