Gunmen snatch, burn newspapers

KARACHI: Unidentified gunmen, in lightning early morning raids at newspaper stalls in widely separated parts of the city, snatched bundles of newspapers and set them ablaze before fleeing from the scene, police and hawkers said on March 1.

A senior police officer told The News that some hawkers had informed the police but nobody had volunteered to lodge a report with the police about the vandalism till March 1, night.

The officer has promised to arrange security for the hawkers in future. Recounting the incident of vandalism, one office-bearer of the hawkers’ association told reporters that armed youths thronged the newspapers’ depots at New Challi, Old Numaish, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Saddar, Hussainabad and Water-Pump (in the Federal B Area), trained their guns at the hawkers, forcibly snatched newspapers’ bundles and set them alight.

The dumbfounded hawkers were unable to protest with guns trained on them and the acts of burning of newspapers remained unexplained, one hawker said.
