Govt urged to lift TV coverage ban

KARACHI: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has urged the Pakistani government to immediately rescind its decision disallowing foreign broadcasters to do live transmissions from Abbottabad.

“It is reckless for Pakistan to interfere with the flow of information from the site of what is one of the world`s most important news stories. Falling back on regulatory controls to stifle the flow of news is shortsighted and does a disservice to the entire world. The government should back away from this decision immediately,” Bob Dietz, CPJ`s Asia programme coordinator, said in a statement released here on Saturday night.

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Saturday barred all major foreign television channels from making live broadcasts from Abbottabad, saying they had been working in the town without its permission.

Among the news channels that were issued notices are CNN, BBC, FOX, NBC, CNS, IBN, Al Jazeera, Voice of America and Sky News.

Abbottabad has been a focal point for global and local broadcasters since the United States operation on May 2 which killed Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in a raid on the compound in which he had been living.
