Govt decides to clip Pemra powers

ISLAMABAD: The government has principally decided to confine and withdraw the power of Pemra to cancel licence and award punishment. It also decided to strengthen media complaint commission, which would be headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court.

The representatives of the government and Pakistan Broadcaster Association (PBA) will be the part of this commission.

Special Adviser to Prime Minister for National Affairs Irfan Siddiqui in a brief interview with the foreign media said that the government was pondering about limiting the power of Pemra and for this purpose it government formed-committee was considering making amendment in Pemra laws. Irfan Siddiqui said if we want to make media complaint commission effective then we would move recommendation to extract Pemra’s power of canceling licence and awarding punishment. He said that Pemra should be made authority of issuing licence and monitoring cable operators.
