‘Govt committed to upholding democracy, empowering media’

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said Tuesday that the successful holding of Senate elections in the country was a clear indication of the governmentís commitment to upholding the democratic process.

Chairing a meeting of media chiefs to highlight the four-year performance of the democratic government, the minister said, “The credit for this achievement goes to the political sagacity of President Asif Ali Zardari, and the policy of reconciliation pursued by Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani.”

Dr Awan said that the Pakistan Peopl’s Party (PPP) was determined to see through all democratic processes for the sake of the stability of the country and the welfare of the people welfare.

“The completion of Senate elections is proof of the fact that the present democratic government is committed to strengthening democracy and nationalinstitutions,” the minister said in her address. “The consensus on the election of Senate Chairman and Deputy Chairman is a good omen, which indicates that we are marching towards the path of political stability and maturity,” she added.

Dr Awan also said that the government firmly believed in bestowing full freedom to the media, and announced that steps had recently been taken in this regard.“It has always supported freedom of expression, and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto remained a strong supporter of a free media and freedom of speech,î she held.

The information minister claimed that the PPP-led government desired to see a strong and empowered media, and said that her party has been accredited with the lifting of various restrictions on the media imposed by previous dictatorial regimes.
