Government in advanced stage to create press council

KARACHI- The government is in an advanced stage of creating a press council in consultation with different press bodies. “We have received a well drafted proposal from the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) and we will hold a meeting with them next month.” This was stated by Information Minister Javed Jabbar, while addressing the inaugural ceremony of Pakistan Advertising Institute (PAI).

Javed said Nepal, Sri Lanka, India and all other countries in the region have their respective press councils. He said though not elected the present government deeply believed in the freedom of press and democracy. Javed further said that the government would also invite Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and other representative bodies to exchange views on the proposed press council.

With regard to long-awaited wage board constitution, Javed said that the government was about to announce the constitution of the board within a day or two. Though, he said, it was not his subject, but he had talked to Labour and Manpower Minister Omar Asghar Khan about it.
