Government confirms DNA tests show body is Pearl’s
KARACHI: Authorities in Karachi said on Saturday DNA tests carried out locally showed that a decapitated body found in Karachi in May was that of murÂdered Wall Street Journal re~ Daniel Pearl.
Interior Minister Moin uddin Haider told reporters here. that separate DNA tests carried out by the United States and provided to Pakistan had been “inj6nclusive”.
“But they (American authoriÂties) also suspect that the body belongs to Daniel Pearl,”-he said.
The 38-year-old American disÂappeared on January 23 while researching a story. A videotape emerged later showing he had been decapitated.
Earlier, the provincial governÂment of Sindh said in a statement that tests done in Pakistan had “confirmed that the body parts discovered … on May 17 belong to that of Daniel Pearl of the. Wall Street Journal, USA”.
Haider said US authorities had said they would carry out two more tests and would send Pakistan a supplementary report on these.
He said the Pakistani findings meant Pearl’s remains could now be returned to his family. US offiÂcials said earlier in the week Pearl’s body could not be turned.
