Government believes in press freedom

LAHORE- The Governor Punjab, Lt. Gen. Muhammad Safdar (Retd), has said that the present set up is the only government is for the first time in the history of the country that realizes, recognizes and appreciates the role of Press as the fourth pillar of the state, besides taking guidance from its constructive criticism.

In a message issued here on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Governor said it is indeed recognition of the importance of the press that today the world community is celebrating the World Press Freedom Day.

He said that in Pakistan, media, over the years, has acquired a due importance not only with regard to creating awareness among common man about the issues facing the nation, but also through serving the cause peace, progress and prosperity.

The Governor said that he was of the considered opinion that along with freedom of the Press, which is the right and privilege of the journalistic community, the importance of responsibility and constructive criticism cannot be ignored, because only then a positive sense of direction can be found and policies formulated accordingly.
