Geo Television organises ‘Geo Writers Conference 2007’

As per its tradition, Geo Television organised ‘Geo Writers Conference 2007’ at a local hotel on Friday. The conference aimed at improving the standards of script writing and drama making keeping in view the requirements of modern times.

Geo has been organising this event since its establishment in 2002. Veteran scrip writers, artistes, and intellectuals from television attended the conference. The main theme for this yearís conference was ‘struggle for creative writingí.

Chairing the session, writer Envar Sajjad said that a lot of upcoming television channels were adapting to different methods and techniques that had led to tremendous transformation of drama during the past few years. Though the past was glorious, he said that in order to move with the present demands of the viewers and the market, changes should be adopted but that too with responsibility.

Writer Shakil Aadilzada said that scripts had always been returned due to their weak scripting. However, the ideas in them had always been inspirational and powerful.

Talking about the capabilities of a writer, Noor-ul-Huda Shah said that a writer should always have a benchmark position as compared to other minds of society. In order to have creative and effective writing, she said scripts should not have just mere stories but they need to have roots of the story in society and people. ‘To write a powerful script narrating a strong idea, a writer should be well-versed of the surrounding, raise questions about it and should be vocal with his opinion” she said.

Writer Seema Ghazal said that writing was just limited to moneyís sake. She was of the view that if a script was rejected, people ever bother to fix the loopholes, rather on contrary they negotiate of what price they can get out of it. ”Nowadays, the government, marketing, producer, everybody has their own censor to apply to the writers. Still writer manages to convey his idea one way or the other”, she said.

Writer Zafar Mairaj said that every writer wrote for himself. ‘The more the coordination between the director and the writer, the greater result of story can be seen on the screen”, he said.

Artistes from the field also spoke on the occasion. Producer and director Sahira Kazmi said that the will required to take up these issues and speak on them was the prime requirement of the time.

Rubina Ashraf said that whenever there were restrictions on media and freedom of speech, there was progress hidden in it. ”This is because an artiste always tries to find ways to voice his opinion and in search of these ways, he explores new ways and ideas”, she said.

The speakers unanimously agreed that rat race of commercialism and a growing number of private channels have resulted in time constraints for the artists, writers and directors. Talat Hussain, Taj Haider, Obaidullah Baig, Khalid Ahmad also spoke on the occasion.
