Geo Super asks FIA to act against illegal broadcast by PTV, others

KARACHI: The Geo Super administration has asked the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to promptly act against the state-owned PTV and some other private TV channels for showing Cricket World Cup via cable by violating law and committing contempt of court, according to an application sent to the agency.

Making it loud and clear to the channels through newspapers and Geo Super, the Geo Super administration had warned them against broadcasting the world cup as, according to the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the Islamabad High Court, ICC and Pemra, the Geo Super is the sole broadcaster of the world cup and the related programmes. In case of violation of the above, these channels would face legal proceedings.

The FIA has been informed that the despite the fact that Geo Super’s exclusive rights to the world cup broadcast had already been reported by media, the PTV and some other channels showed the world cup inaugural ceremony in sheer violation of law. The FIA was informed that these TV channels would be responsible for any financial loss to the Geo Super due to their violation. The Geo Super administration has also written to these TV channels to this effect.

The Geo Super is also going to move court, while it has also asked the Pemra to take necessary action. Some channels, in a similar manner, had showed cricket matches violating law and undermining Geo Super’s exclusive rights last year. Geo Super had warned these channels and sent applications to the FIA which had been pending with it. At that time a TV channel’s administration expressed its desire to opt for apology.
