Geo producer issued contempt notice

LAHORE – A division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued notice to Masooma Taqi, producer of private Cable TV channel Geo, and directed her to explain on September 27 why she should not be punished for committing contempt of court.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry had directed the division bench of Justices Sheikh Abdul Rashid and M Bilal Khan to initiate suo moto contempt proceedings against Ms Taqi. The chief justice took offence at a fax that Ms Taqi, producer of Choti Khabar Bari Baat, sent inviting him to appear in a programme about the demolition of the west wing of the LHC building.

Justice Chaudhry said the language of the fax message was improper and did not address him with the decorum superior court judges were entitled to. The chief justice said besides, the programme was an attempt to provoke public sentiments against the judiciary.

On court notice, Ms Taqi appeared with her counsel on September 16. She admitted that she sent a fax invitation to the chief justice inviting him to participate in the programme.

Counsel for Ms Taqi said she did not seek his legal assistance before inviting the chief justice. The court said Ms Taqi prima facie committed contempt of court and then served her with the notice. The court also directed the TV authorities to present all the material screened about the issue of the demolition.
