Geo polls on Osama killing, dangers to nuclear assets and govt performance

ISLAMABAD: Only seven percent people in Pakistan are happy over the murder of Osama bin Laden while half the population is sad or worried following his killing, polls conducted by Geo Television Network have revealed.

Polls also say seven out of 10 Pakistanis blame President Asif Ali Zardari for the release of CIA agent Raymond Davis. Most Pakistanis do not believe OBL was murdered in the Abbottabad operation while more than half of the population is in favour of negotiations with Taliban.

Geo Television Network conducted two polls in the months of April and May in nine major cities and 42 villages across the country. The cities include Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar and Quetta. The samples included males and females of over 18 years of age.

Fifty-five percent Pakistanis do not agree with the statement that the world has become more secure after OBL’s murder, while 36 percent neither agree nor disagree with the statement. As many as 46 percent people think the Abbottabad operation was not possible without the cooperation of Pakistan, while 32 percent say America did not inform Pakistan and 23 percent do not know anything about the operation.

Half of the population feels that Pakistani nuclear assets are in danger after the OBL killing, while 31 percent believe there is no threat to nuclear assets and the rest do not know about the issue.

While four out of 10 people think Pakistani intelligence agencies failed to stop the US operation in Abbottabad, 34 percent say it was not a failure of security agencies while 25 percent said they didn’t know.

Forty-seven percent people consider that after the Abbottabad operation, Pak-US relations will become worse; 34 percent say there will be no affect on the Pak-US relations; six percent believe relations will improve, while 13% do not know about the issue.

As many as 77 percent people believe the US was an enemy of Pakistan while seven percent say US is a friend and 16% believe US is neither a friend nor enemy. As many as 97 percent Pakistanis say due to increased inflation it is becoming impossible to meet daily expenses.

Among all Pakistanis, Geo TV’s ‘Aaj Kamran Khan Kay Saath’ is the most watched current affairs show and is watched by 33 percent of the population, followed by Capital Talk which is viewed by 15% of the population. Geo News is considered as the favourite channel (51% Pakistanis tune in), the best for breaking news (59% people) and the channel that best represents Pakistan (49%).

Fifty percent Pakistanis consider that the recent alliance between PPP and the PML-Q was formed for personal interest only and the same number of people voted it wrong. The MQM’s inclusion in the government is voted as being for purely personal gains by four out of 10 Pakistanis, while 26 percent believe it is for political interests and 15 percent say it is for the interest of the country.

Fifty-six percent people are of the view that the PML-N acted as a weak opposition party in parliament while 21% say PML-N is a strong opponent in the parliament and 24 percent do not know about of PML-N’s role.

Eight out of 10 people are dissatisfied with the job President Zardari is doing and only 10 percent approve him as a better performer while the rest are neither satisfied nor dissatisfied. Similarly seven out of 10 people are not happy with Prime Minister Gilani’s performance, while 13 percent people are satisfied with the premier’s performance and the rest do not know.

Three out of four people in Pakistan are hopeless and dissatisfied with the current economic situation of the country, while only eight percent are satisfied. As many as 17 percent are neither satisfied nor dissatisfied.

Thirty-seven percent of the people are not happy at all with their lives; 30 percent are somewhat happy, 18 percent quite happy and 15% are extremely happy. More than 60 percent of the population is not in favour of new provinces in Punjab. Only 25 percent favour new provinces, while 15% do not know. 65% people are not in favour of new provinces in Sindh while only 20% approve making new provinces in the province and 16 percent do not know about the issue.

Fifty-five percent of the people consider that Pakistan should have dialogue with Afghan Taliban, while 24% say no to negotiations with Taliban. Twenty-one percent do not know about the issue.
