Geo challenges media ban: SHC issues notices to PEMRA, Info secy
KARACHI: Pre-admission notices were issued for Nov 16, Friday, by a division bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday to the chairman of PEMRA (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority), the Federal Secretary of Information, the Attorney General of Pakistan and the Advocate General of Sindh for Nov 16 in two identical petitions filed by Independent Media Corporation and Birds (Pvt) Limited.
The petitioner has challenged the ban on Geo News, Geo Super, Geo Entertainment and AAG television since Nov 3. The petitions were earlier adjourned on Monday to a date to be fixed by the office of the court. They were fixed Wednesday on a motion by the counsel for the petitioners who moved another application for an urgent hearing.
When the petitions came up for hearing, the state counsel claimed notice at which the bench issued notices to the respondents for Nov 16. The petitioners maintain that amendments in the PEMRA Ordinance related to only new channels and not entertainment, sport and others. The ban was placed before amendments to the PEMRA Ord and thus the law was itself violated by the authorities who directed the cable operators to stop telecasting the TV channels.
