GENEVA (AFP) – The international Red Cross said Tuesday two of its employees have gone missing in Pakistan after travelling to a town on the border with Afghanistan.

The field workers were on a routine logistical mission when they disappeared on Saturday and their vehicle was marked with the insignia of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the organisation said in a statement.

They were travelling to the border town of Torkham when colleagues based in Peshawar lost radio and phone contact with them. The two employees are Pakistani nationals and their families have been informed about the situation and any developments, the ICRC said.

“We are in direct contact with the national and local authorities in order to ascertain the circumstances of their disappearance, their current status and whereabouts, and to ensure that they return safe and sound,” said Marc Achermann, head of the ICRC sub-delegation in Peshawar.
