Free media vital to democracy: Memon

ISLAMABAD (February 15 2008): Caretaker Information Minister Nisar Memon on Thursday said free media was vital for democracy but stressed that it must ensure balanced and impartial reporting.

Speaking here at the concluding programme of “United for Election” organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting the minister said Pakistan was passing through a critical juncture and it was vital the media differentiate between rumour mongering and reporting facts.

“It is vital that no misleading reports are aired and all the stakeholders play their due role to ensure peace during the elections,” Memon said. He said the independent media in the country was playing a pivotal role by ensuring that only balanced and authentic reports were aired.

He apprised the President about the series of programmes that were aimed at creating awareness among the people about the electoral process. He said the participants, including representatives from the media were fully supportive of the initiative and came up with several suggestions for holding of free, fair, transparent and peaceful elections.
