Free media promoting democratic values: Prime Minister

ISLAMABAD (March 12 2007): Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has said that freedom being enjoyed by the media has helped promote and strengthen democratic values in the country.

He said this while talking to Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Muhammad Ali Durrani and Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Tariq Azeem who called on him at the Prime Minister’s House here on Sunday.

The prime minister appreciated the role of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in promoting freedom of the press, which, he said, was essential for the success of democracy.

He also appreciated the role of the media in creating social and political awareness in the people as they now have multiple sources of information and analysis on both national and international issues. He said that growth of media, especially in the private sector, had provided jobs to thousands.

The prime minister said that print and electronic media were complimenting each other and the government would continue to encourage and promote them so that they could continue to improve both the content of news and news analysis.

The ministers apprised the Prime Minister of the steps being taken by the Ministry for establishing media university and media city in Islamabad.

They said that these steps would facilitate professionalism and further promote the role of media in the country.
