Free, fair polls top priority of caretaker government: Soomro

KARACHI (November 18 2007): Caretaker Prime Minister Mohammedmian Soomro has said that the caretaker government’s top priority is to ensure free, fair and transparent general elections in the country. He said this in separate meetings with Governor Sindh, Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan at the Governor’s House and Chief Minister Sindh, Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim at the CM’s House on Saturday evening.

The caretaker Prime Minister said that the government is taking steps for creating a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the elections. In this regard, he said, the government would welcome suggestions from all political parties in the country.

The caretaker Prime Minister said the government expects the political parties to abide by the Code of Conduct circulated by the Election Commission and also to follow the security guidelines issued by the Interior Ministry. He said that the caretaker government would ensure continuity of the reform-oriented policies so that the people of Pakistan continue to benefit from them.

The Caretaker Prime Minister was briefed about overall law and order situation in the province and the steps being taken by the Sindh government for holding elections in a peaceful atmosphere. The Governor and the Chief Minister congratulated Mohammedmian Soomro on assuming new responsibilities. Earlier, Caretaker Prime Minister Mohammadmian Soomro arrived here from Islamabad.

On arrival at Karachi Airport, he was received by Sindh Governor, Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, Chief Minister, Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim, and other officials. This is Mohammadmian Soomro’s first visit to Karachi after assuming the charge of Caretaker Prime Minister. From the airport he headed to his mother’s home.
