* SSP’s sons killed in 1994, case may be linked

KARACHI: Former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Aziz-ur-Rehman and Hassan Square Police Headquarter Head Constable Nadim were killed Friday by unidentified assailants within the jurisdiction of the New Karachi Industrial Area Police. Furthermore, RehmanÂ’s son, a sub-inspector posted at Aziz Bhatti Police Station, was injured as well.

New Karachi TPO SP Javaid Ahmed Baloch told Daily Times that the unidentified armed men attacked when Rehman was returning from Masjid-e-Shudah, located in Sector 6-B, New Karachi after offering his Friday prayers. When they got to New Karachi No. 5, armed men surrounded his jeep, sprayed it with bullets and fled.

Rehman sustained eight bullet wounds and Nadim six. His son, Tariq, sustained one bullet wound and was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and then shifted to Aga Khan Hospital. He is not in any danger.

According to initial investigations, this was a targeted killing and the culprits used AK-47s. Baloch said that they took Tariq’s statement and he said that he only saw one armed man. According to some witnesses, however, there were six people on three motorcycles.

The former SSP retired around two years ago but got an extension for another one-and-a-half years and finally completed his tenure six months ago.

It may be mentioned that two sons of Rehman, Kashif Aziz and Rashid Aziz, were killed in 1994 while returning from Friday prayers in the Al Falah area. Kashif was a banker and Rashid was an SI in the FIA.

Rehman lived with his family in the police quarters within the jurisdiction of the Shahra-e-Faisal Police Station. Shuhda Mosque was established by Rehman after his sons were killed.

Police said that one of his late sons was seeing a girl who lived in the Al Falah area and that one Farooq (alias Dada) of the MQM was “in love” with the same woman.
