Five more shot dead

Karachi: Five more people, including a supporter of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), were killed in political and sectarian attacks in the city on Saturday.

The murders occurred on the day when a five-member bench of the Supreme Court expressed its concern over a police report that said target killings had increased and the law and order situation had worsened.

PPP supporter slain

Ameen Lashari, 32, was shot dead in the Liaquat Market of Saudabad. Station House Officer (SHO) Hassan Haider of the Saudabad police station said Lashari was a resident of the Malir City area and employee of Pakistan International Airlines.

He was sitting at the Karsaz Biryani Centre in the afternoon when two men riding a motorcycle shot and injured him before fleeing. The injured was carried to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where he breathed his last. The victim had suffered a single bullet wound to his head.

Investigators termed his murder a target killing, and said he was the supporter of the PPP. They said that the victim’s elder brother was a ward president of the PPP in Malir City.

Sectarian attack

A 27-year-old man, Hammad Ahmed, died in a sectarian attack in North Karachi, police said.

Superintendant of Police Syed Salman of New Karachi Division said Ahmed was sitting at his Z&Z Communications shop near Anda Moore in North Karachi when two armed men on motorcycles stopped at his workplace. One of the men entered his shop and shot him and fled.

He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he died. The victim suffered a single bullet wound to his chest. A 9mm pistol was used in the shooting. Police said the victim belonged to the Shia community and the murder seemed to be a part of the sectarian killing.

Man slain in Orangi

Another afternoon attack killed a senior employee of a beverage company in Gulshan-e-Zia in Orangi Town. Pakistan Bazaar police said Zafar Hussain was heading towards his workplace on a motorcycle, when at some distance from his house two men riding a motorcycle shot and injured him.

He was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he breathed his last. He had been hit by a single bullet in the chest. A 30-bore pistol was used in the attack. Investigators said the victim was a supporter of a political party.

Two bodies found

The tortured and bullet-riddled bodies of two unidentified men were found within the Soldier Bazaar police remit.

SHO Amjad Kiyani said the bodies were found near Committee Hall in Soldier Bazaar Saturday night. The corpses were shifted to the CHK for legal formalities. He said the victims were kidnapped from an unknown place and subjected to brutal torture and shot multiple times. The victims were then packed in separate gunny bags and thrown at the above mentioned places.
