Filmmaking effective medium to highlight issues

ISLAMABAD: To control culturally sanctioned violence against women in the less developed areas of the country, the filmmaking is an effective medium to resolve these issues, said Samar Minallah, a renowned human rights activist and a documentary filmmaker on Tuesday.

She said this during a meeting “Positive perceptions organised by Individual land Pakistan, a non government organisation aimed at celebrating positive outlooks of individuals as well as highlighting various social issue.

Minallah shared her mosaic of videos and documentaries with the participants, Samar recalled the factors and inspirations, which led her to take this journey.

The main objective of her filmmaking to bring various issues and problems into the notice of authorities, she said. It is relevant to mention here that Samar Minallah is the founder of Ethno media, a non- government advocacy based organisation.

With an M. Phil in Anthropology & Development from the University of Cambridge, Samar focuses on a culturally sensitive approach while reaching out to her target audience.

She shared her experience of working on the critical issues of the human trafficking, the heartless and ruthless rituals against the women in the less developed areas of Pakistan and atrocities of Tailban on women. She shared startling facts, which turned out to be ‘quite a shocker’ for the audience.

She also shared a documentary, prepared over the custom of Swara, (Alternative dispute resolution or traditional peace making system) during the meeting.

She summed up her talk by mentioning the change factor she has been able to pioneer in the affected areas.

As a concluding remark, Gulmina Bilal of the Individual land applauded her efforts and opined that such individuals can bring much needed positive change in these gloomy and dark times.
