Film producers’ registration law opposed

LAHORE, July 19 2005: The All Pakistan Film Directors Association has termed movie producers’ registration law as a ‘black law’ and demanded its immediate abrogation. Founder Chairman of the Film Directors’ Association, Nizzo Ali Fartash, said here on July 18 that the Film Producers Association was charging heavy fee from the filmmakers in the name of registration due to which investment in the film industry had come down.

According to him, the Film Producers Association receives Rs 17,000 fee from every new entrant, intending to produce a film, which is not fair.

There was no such a law for the private television producers and stage producers, so why this discrimination against the filmmakers, he questioned.

He further said this law had blocked new entrants to the film industry, which almost halted fresh investment in this sector. This has not only caused loss to the industry, but also to the national exchequer.

This law had been enacted in 1981 in the regime of General Zia ul Haq in order to bring about improvement in quality of filmmaking, but it has failed to achieve the desired result, he pointed out.

He claimed that since 1981 till now, no quality movie has been produced in the country, which means that, this law has not been able to have any positive impact on the film industry.
