Film distributors seek PM’s help

LAHORE: The Pakistan Film Distributors` Association seeks Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani`s intervention in securing a berth for Pakistani flicks in local cinemas on Eids.

In a letter written to Mr Gilani, movie distributors say that on the coming Eid, two Urdu and two Punjabi films will be released which are likely to face a stiff fight for a place in cinemas as cinema owners are likely to go for Indian films because they attract huge movie buffs.

The letter reads that former culture minister Aftab Jilani, in a meeting on Jan 22, had decided that of 52 weeks a year, 12 would be given to foreign films for exhibition in local cinemas and the remaining 40 weeks would be reserved for Pakistani movies.

The letter says that cinema owners are reluctant to provide facilities for the exhibition of Pakistani movies and prefer foreign films. This year, the four films going to be released on Eidul Fitr are: Bhai Log, directed by Faisal Bokhari; Love Mein Gum, directed by Reema Khan; Shah Murad, directed by Pervaiz Rana; and Jugni, directed by Syed Noor.

Film producer Chaudhry Kamran says cinema owners should change their attitude towards Pakistani films.

“We demand that the government should take all necessary measures to bound cinema owners for the exhibition of Pakistani films on Eid,” he said, adding that cinema owners should realise that the exhibition of Pakistani films will bring back audience to Pakistani cinema.
