FATA journalists to be trained on averting risks

PESHAWAR: The media persons from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and the Tribal Union of Journalists (TUJ) are being trained to build the capacity of journalists of these regions and to reduce the risks to their lives by monitoring attacks on media.

Intermedia, an Islamabad-based media development organization launched three-day training for the presidents of all the Press Clubs of FATA as well as TUJ from today (Saturday) with a focus on advocacy, research and training on media issues and extending technical assistance especially to journalists and media in FATA and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a press statement said on Friday.

The training will include understanding and mapping the threat index for journalists and media in FATA and KP, developing prevention and response mechanisms to avert risks, monitoring and documenting violations against journalists and attacks on the media as well as adopting a framework of researched do’s and don’ts to stay both safe and professional in hostile environments.

The training will also coach the leadership of journalists in FATA and KP on seeking assistance from the Pakistan Journalists Safety Fund (PJSF), a mechanism being managed by Intermedia to provide a range of assistance to journalists in distress, including financial and legal assistance and relocation.

After the training, the presidents of the press clubs will be provided technical assistance by Intermedia to conduct a two-day training at each of the press clubs for all members of all press clubs in FATA, making this the first media development project in FATA to benefit all journalists in FATA.

The training is being held in response to the increasing difficulties that journalists of these regions, particularly FATA, are facing in the line of duty. At least 75 journalists have been killed in the line of duty since January 1, 2000 and hundreds injured, kidnapped or arrested in the same period. This includes at least 18 journalists killed in KP in this period and 10 in FATA.
