Farooq Awan named new Pakistan Telecommunication Authority chairman

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has appointed Farooq Awan as chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) with immediate effect, confirmed the new appointee.

“Yes, I have been appointed chairman PTA on specified terms and conditions,” said Farooq Awan on Tuesday night. He said he would no longer serve as secretary to the Ministry of Information Technology since he could not fulfil his obligations as a government official and a regulator simultaneously. “A new secretary IT will be appointed by the government,” he said.

Awan succeeds the last PTA chairman Dr Mohammad Yasin, who had been said to have been expecting an extension. However, say sources, PTA’s failure to auction 3-G licenses played a role in Yasin’s downfall. And, they say, Yasin’s performance in the last grilling session before the Public Accounts Committee sealed his fate.
