DADU: The family of the teenage girl drawn in a matrimonial dispute and declared kari by an influential of the area and a close relative, had to finally leave their native village on fears she may be killed according to landlord’s threats.

Mehmood Shahani and his family left Hoat Khan Shahani village of Johi taluka on Monday for a new abode. The girl, after leaving the village, recorded her statement before the DSP Johi, Mohammad Omer Shahani in his office.

The DSP told Dawn that the girl was scared and confused and could utter only a few words in Balochi against the accused.

The feud runs back to a decade when the family of Mahmood Shahni gave consent to marry their daughter with Jaind’s nephew, Jamal.

Sabz, Jaind and Mehran were common relatives of Mehmood Shahani and the landlord.

Later, the girl’s family refused to honour marriage commitment which infuriated the landlord who started threatening his poor relatives either to leave the village or he would declare their girl, a kari. Afterwards, he warned of killing the girl if the family did not leave the village. The girl’s family instead filed a complaint which police converted into a report and named landlord the main accused, besides six others.

Mehmood Shahani told journalists that the Gaji Shah police had not arrested the landlord because they were supporting him.

Police on Monday arrested Sabz Ali and Jamal Shahani after conducting a raid.

The SHO of Gaji Shah police station told Dawn that the arrested accused had been produced in a Dadu court which sent them to Johi jail on 14-day judicial remand and confirmed the family had migrated to some new land.

Meanwhile, the Child Rights Committee of Dadu held a meeting and demanded the arrest of the accused. Participants warned of launching a drive against police, if all accused, including the landlord were not arrested.

The meeting was presided over by the coordinator of the committee, Inayat Hussain Jamali.
