English daily suspends publication

LAHORE- Daily The Sun which started its operation from the city about a year ago was closed down without any notice to its workers.

The Sun workers said that the closure came as a surprise to them. They said that the newsroom left the office after preparing the news pages but the newspaper did not appear the next morning. An effort was made to get the version of the newspaper management but there was nobody available at the office to explain the situation. A telephone operator, however, insisted that the paper had not been closed down. “It will appear on Saturday,” he said.

Asked if there was anybody present in the newsroom, the reporting section or the management offices, he said no one was there. He was not aware why the paper could not appear on Thursday and Friday. Meanwhile, the Punjab Union of journalists (PUJ) has called an emergency meeting on Saturday at the Lahore Press Club to discuss the issue. PUJ president Bakhtgir Chaudhry criticized the newspaper management for closing down the paper without issuing any notice to the workers, many of whom have outstanding dues to be paid by the newspaper. He said that the future course of action would be decided in Saturday’s meeting.
