Emergency to be lifted before polls: Shujaat

RAWALPINDI (November 29 2007): Today is very important day in Pakistan’s history as President Musharraf has doffed his uniform and as a civilian president he will be acceptable to everyone and would remain a symbol of the federation, said Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, former Prime Minister and President of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q).

“The second phase of peaceful transition of power was completed on Wednesday with President’s uniform and it is for the first time that power was transferred peacefully and smoothly”, he said while addressing as chief guest in a ceremony of distribution of allotment letters of Journalists Housing Scheme, Lohi Bher.

He, along with Secretary Information Punjab, Ashfaq Gondal distributed about 1600 allotment letters to the journalists of the twin cities.

Referring to present political situation, Chaudhry Shujaat said that in this situation media has a great role to play to build a national consensus. All the news channels are allowed to air their transmission and GEO TV channel would also be opened soon, he said.

He said that all the promises PML made with masses were fulfilled and in future all the commitments would also be fulfilled. “We are in elections and confident that PML would clean sweep the upcoming elections on the basis of its performance”, PML president said.

Chaudhry Shujaat said that some politicians are issuing hard hitting statements after return of Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif but we are silent and watching the situation and we will give reply in the general elections, he said.

He said that emergency would be lifted before general elections and polls would be conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner. “We need no support of emergency because we have delivered during past five years and made achievements in economic and other fields”, he said.

“We don’t want to contest elections in the presence of emergency as Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto would have no impact on popularity of the PML-Q in upcoming elections”, he said. He congratulated the journalists for getting plots saying that this would give them complete peace of mind and they would discharge their professional and national duties, wholeheartedly.
