ECP forms electoral reforms committee

Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan Justice (retd) Qazi Muhammad Farooq has constituted an “electoral reforms committee” under the chairmanship of Secretary ECP to review the existing electoral laws and propose reforms in them.

Other members of the committee will be provincial election commissioners of Punjab and Sindh, joint secretaries (Elections, Administration and Local Government Elections), director general (Information Technology) and section officer (Law).

The electoral reforms committee has been mandated to suggest electoral reforms and appropriate amendments in the existing electoral laws and related acts, rules, regulations, procedures and processes.

It would also look into suggestions and reports of international and national election observation groups, particularly the reports of European Union Election Observation Mission and Canadian High Commission Election Observation as well as the socio-political environment of the country in line with best election practices around the world.

The committee will critically analyse the entire electoral process and related areas with the endeavour to make the electoral process more transparent and credible in compliance with international standards.

The electoral reforms committee will present its report to the chief election commissioner, highlighting the proposed electoral reforms.
