CPNE flays torture of journalists by lawyers

KARACHI: President Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors Khushnood Ali Khan and Secretary General Amir Mehmood have strongly condemned torture of journalists and damage to their properties by lawyers in Lahore.

In a statement issued here Thursday, the CPNE office bearers have stressed upon lawyers’ leaders to expel irresponsible and violent elements from the community.

They also appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to take suo moto notice of the incident and ensure high-level probe into the incident so that
affected people could get justice.

The CPNE has expressed its resolve that if any effort was made to suppress the media, then media organisations and journalists community would react strongly. The CPNE
statement said that media and lawyers are part of the civil society.

They expressed the fear that torture of journalists by lawyers would cause harm to the civil society. The statement said the media highlighted problems faced by the common man and that is why injustices to Mukhtaran Mai, Dr Shazia Kahlid and Safia Bibi got public reaction.

The CPNE office-bearers stressed the government not to succumb to any pressure exerted by any group and ensure justice to the affected persons.
